WEIGHT MANAGEMENT
Semaglutide
Also known as Ozempic, Wegovy, Rybelsus
Approved
Semaglutide is a GLP-1 agonist approved by regulators for indications such as type 2 diabetes and chronic weight management, depending on formulation and jurisdiction. Its evidence base is strong compared with research-only peptides, but use should follow approved labelling and clinical supervision.
Plasma half-life
168 h
Reference dose range
250–2400 mcg
Reported frequency
Once weekly for subcutaneous formulations
Reported routes
Subcutaneous, Oral
Approximately one week, supporting once-weekly subcutaneous formulations.
Use the calculators for arithmetic only
Use the reconstitution calculator to turn a vial size into a concentration, or the dose volume calculator to convert a known reference amount into a volume. These tools do not recommend a protocol.
Mechanism
Semaglutide is a GLP-1 receptor agonist. Activation of this pathway increases glucose-dependent insulin secretion, reduces glucagon, slows gastric emptying and influences satiety centres in the central nervous system.
Reported effects
Weight reduction in phase 3 trials for approved indications
Glycaemic control in type 2 diabetes
Cardiovascular outcomes evaluated in outcomes trials
Appetite reduction observed in clinical studies
Commonly reported side effects
Nausea, especially during dose escalation
Vomiting
Diarrhoea
Constipation
Administration-site reactions
Pancreatitis risk, rare
Thyroid C-cell warning in relevant labelled contexts
Certainty and limits
Semaglutide has regulatory approvals for specific indications and evidence from large randomised trials. This entry does not replace approved labelling or individual clinical assessment.
