Tirzepatide is a dual GIP and GLP-1 receptor agonist approved by regulators for indications such as type 2 diabetes and chronic weight management, depending on formulation and jurisdiction. Mechanism
Tirzepatide is a dual agonist of the GIP and GLP-1 receptors. Activating both pathways increases glucose-dependent insulin secretion, reduces glucagon, slows gastric emptying, and acts on appetite centres in the central nervous system. The added GIP-receptor activity is the main mechanistic difference from single GLP-1 agonists such as semaglutide.
